So, here I am, Monday morning in Sydney Australia on a rainy and humid Autumn day – and I’ve decided to start a blog. But not just any blog… A blog dedicated to all things crochet, and specifically to sharing my crochet experiences, makes and patterns with YOU!
But where to begin? “Hi. My name is Gemma, and I’m a crochet-a-holic” – true, but too cliche… “Hey there, and welcome to my blog” – inviting, but too impersonal… How about I just fill you in on where it all began and how I came to decide to write a blog:
For Christmas in 2014, my mum gave me a beautiful little book of crochet patterns called Hello Kitty Crochet by Mei Li Lee. **Side Note: I love Hello Kitty as well as crochet** And therein laid the problem: I didn’t know how to crochet! So over the Christmas break I madly watched (what felt like) hundreds of YouTube videos until I came across Bella Coco who’s instructional crochet videos ‘just made sense’ to me – and so my love for crochet was born!
My first make was a simple ‘half-double-crochet square’; followed by another one, and another and another, with the assumption that it would become a blanket! Well, to this day it still sits in a box as individual squares… Also to this day I haven’t made anything from that Hello Kitty Crochet book! You see, the problem with (i.e. best thing about) crochet is that there are so many possibilities: so many patterns to try, so many types of yarn to buy, and so many crochet items that are yet to be invented…
This (very quickly) leads me to my involvement in an Australian magazine: Handmade. Skip forward to July 2015: I was (seemingly) randomly contacted by Handmade Magazine via my Facebook page (then called Crochet Kingdom) and asked if I wanted to become a contributor. Of course I was ecstatic! But there was a problem: I’d never written my own pattern before. I could read them and follow them, but write them? I wasn’t sure… But, keen not to miss this opportunity, I said “Heck yes!! Where do I sign!?” (actually I said something more along the lines of “Wow, I’m honoured. I would absolutely love to be involved.”). It was at that point that I realised just how limitless the world of crochet really was – I could create anything… ANYTHING! And while writing crochet patterns isn’t for everyone, I’ve personally found that it’s not as hard as I first thought.
But how does this all tie together? Well, having spent a year or so trying (almost) every pattern I could get my hands on as a beginner, to becoming a contributor to Handmade Magazine, has meant that I’ve built up a decent knowledge and understanding of crochet principles over the time – as well as the beginnings of a decent inventory of crochet patterns that I’ve written (I admit, I still feel hugely proud about being able to say that I write my *own* patterns). And that, my friends, has led me to start this blog where I want to take you on my crochet-journey – past, present and future – sharing the wonders and details of all things crochet: how to crochet, why crochet is so important to me, and hopefully peaking your interest in picking up a hook and giving it a go (if you haven’t already tried it)!
I’ll be aiming to post here every Saturday morning, but I want this blog to be a 2-way-conversation between you and me. I want to be able to show you how to crochet and I want you to tell me if I’m being helpful or not… I want to be able to share my life experiences with you and I want you to feel free to do the same… I want to be able to post patterns and photos of my crochet items and I want to hear your feedback and suggestions… I want to get to know you!
So have a click around, have a read, have a chat – I hope you enjoy your time here
